Help Protect Your Website From Spam

It is often noticed that the greed of the SEO companies or the webmasters to get better ranking in a short time often result in Spamming the site. Now the question is what is Spamming? Almost all the Internet users are perhaps aware of the tem spam. In general cases it is thought of as sending unsolicited, shay emails to harass people and clog the servers. But in relation to Search Engine Optimization it is something more than that.

However, though there are a lot of methods of Search Engine Optimization, that helps in getting better ranking on the search engine result pages, still there always remains the chances of mistakes. Often mistakes occur in overdoing some of those things that yields better results. One such problem is Spamming of your website.

There are many things that can result in spamming. As for example stuffing the web pages and meta tags with keywords and key phrases too can result in spamming. Another instance of spamming can be found by leaving your links needlessly without proper content, in comments and messages on other blogs and forums can also be called spamming. The problem is that people having the misconception about Search Engine Optimization often result in such actions. And the ultimate result is that you get your website blacklisted on the search engines sooner or latter.

Often it is seen that you may not be the reason behind the spamming of your website. As we all know how much essential link building is essential for Search Engine Optimization. But the fact is that you cannot just gather links from anywhere. For proper Search Engine Optimization it is very essential to know where the inbound links are coming from. It is not a happy thing for you if you find that you are suddenly having a massive amount of links are all of them are spasm. Therefore it is to be taken good care of that all the links that you get are coming from relevant and trusted sites. And of course if you are into paid links and have invested in buying links there always remains the danger of being flagged by Google as they may enquire the link schemes.

Moreover spamming in the world of Search Engine Optimization is defined as the manipulation of a website to give it an artificial boost in the search engine ranking. However it is the search engines who decide which part of the SEO job done for your website is a spam. Moreover, each of the major search engines provides specific guidelines in which they give the definition what the webmasters should or should not do on their web pages in order to achieve a better ranking on the search engines. And the violation of these guidelines may result in being flagged by the search engine as spamming.

However most of the search engines prefer no hidden links, no hidden text, no automatic tools used for positioning and no cloaking. Therefore they prefer that the search engine spiders and crawlers get exactly the same page as any normal user can see. Otherwise if they finds out any violation of this, your site is going to be charged of spamming and using unfair means. This is however not a good sign for your search engine ranking.

Fighting Spam For Dummies
Fighting Spam For Dummies Unsolicited commercial email--spam--has become the most frequent complaint among users of the Internet. Its blaring subject lines and gaudy content--repetitive at best and frequently offensive--have made it much harder to make productive use of computers. Fighting Spam for Dummies presents some techniques for keeping your email address off spammers' mailing lists and, when that fails, keeping junk mail out of your primary inbox with filters and other utilities. As a last resort, the book (which, oddly, has three co-authors of its 200 small pages) shows you how to adjust your email program so it doesn't automatically show pictures and is less likely to spread viruses.

There's a fair bit of interesting material in this book, a lot of which has to do with the tricks spammers use to conceal their identities. You'll find detailed instructions on how to convert the header lines of a garbage message--complete with obfuscated URLs and fake IP addresses--into the real origin of the message. Of course, there's not much more to do once you've figured out that the message originated in Taiwan or Russia, but that's not the fault of the authors. Elsewhere in this slender handbook, you'll find click-by-click instructions for erecting filters and making other worthwhile configuration changes in Eudora, Netscape and Mozilla Mail, several versions of Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express, and several Webmail sites. --David Wall

Topics covered: Where spam comes from and what you can do about it. Instructions for configuring email clients focus on software for Microsoft Windows.

Stopping Spam: Stamping Out Unwanted Email and News Postings
Stopping Spam: Stamping Out Unwanted Email and News Postings If unwanted advertising is filling your e-mail and clogging up your favorite newsgroups, or if you're a system administrator plagued by spammers, you'll love this book. Schwartz and Garfinkel examine the growth of spam and give readers the tools to help end the problem.

The authors first explain why spam is more than just a mere annoyance and offer solutions that anyone with a basic knowledge of how the Internet and e-mail work can understand. Readers without such knowledge needn't worry--the chapter on Internet basics can get them up to speed.

Schwartz and Garfinkel demonstrate technical, political, and social approaches to keeping spam out of your mailbox and off your system. They discuss the many ways spammers falsify their mail, using fraudulent techniques to disguise where they come from. The authors show you how to avoid being fooled and what you can do to help catch abusers and make them responsible for their misbehavior. --Elizabeth Lewis

Scans incoming network traffic for activities that are characteristic of a network attack. If an attempt to attack your computer is detected, Kaspersky blocks any and all network activity from the attacking computer.

New and Improved in BitDefender 2010

More Protection
Many of today's stealth viruses are designed to avoid antivirus detection by initially laying dormant only to attack your PC when it is most vulnerable. BitDefender 2010 features a cutting-edge security system, Active Virus Control, which constantly monitors all of the processes on your PC, 24/7, blocking any malicious behavior before it can cause any damage.

More Speed
The abundance of new viruses calls for faster ways to detect them. BitDefender's Optimized Scanning avoids the scanning of files that are known to be safe. The result? BitDefender 2010 scans your PC in half the time needed by previous versions, while using less resources.

Easier to Use

Implementation of Proactive Spam Fighting Techniques: Implementation of the Mail-Shake concept and templates based Spam filtering with the KDE Akonadi framework
Implementation of Proactive Spam Fighting Techniques: Implementation of the Mail-Shake concept and templates based Spam filtering with the KDE Akonadi framework In the last years many approaches to reduce the number of spam emails have been proposed. Most of them have in common that the end-user is still required to verify the filtering results. Spam fighting has to become proactive. Unwanted mails have to be blocked before they are delivered to the end-user's mailbox. In this thesis the implementation of two proactive spam fighting techniques is discussed. The first concept, called Mail-Shake, introduces an authentication step before a sender is allowed to send emails to a new contact. Computers are unable to authenticate themselves and so all spam messages are automatically blocked. The development of this concept is discussed in this thesis. The second concept, called Spam Templates, is motivated by the fact that spam messages are generated from a common template. If we gain access to the template we are able to identify spam messages by matching the message against the template. As the template is generated from currently sent spam messages, the template will never match a legitimate mail. In this thesis matching a mail against a template is implemented.

Absolute Time Corrector
Absolute Time Corrector is a Windows 9X/NT/2000/XP/2003/Vista program, designed to provide the exact time to local and network computers based on the time standard set forth by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Absolute Time Corrector queries NIST timeservers using the Internet and then compares NIST time to the time setting of the host computer. If there is a disparity, Absolute Time Corrector automatically adjusts the computer's time to correspond to the correct NIST time. The new version of the software features a lot of improvements, such as adjust hours only option and smart time server selection, improved time zone support, convenient and easy to navigate user interface, very simple LAN setup Wizard. Once set up the host computer can serve as a timeserver to any size network. The host can be set to check NIST time as often or seldom as desired, and each computer in the network can likewise be set to check time on the host computer as often as deemed necessary by the network administrator. This program comes with a list of about 250 tested time servers, so any user can be able choose the best time server for the fastest time access. Another advantage of Absolute Time Corrector is that it comes with full install/uninstall support and can be used by anybody. Using the software is intuitive and requires no special knowledge. Absolute Time Corrector is distributed electronically over the Internet; free demo version is available at www.adjusttime.com for evaluation.

SafeInput Control Lite Version
A secure online transaction includes three main aspects: 1. Server-side: security is well understood and system administrators generally guard their server-side security very well, reducing the risk of hacking attempts on the server. 2. Transmission: security is also well understood with Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) providing strong encryption between the client and server. 3. Client-side: security, although well understood, is generally neglected by end-users who are not sufficiently motivated to take action against hacking attempts, or do not have the skills or knowledge to implement proper security measures or take precautions. SafeInput Control is focus on Client-side and Transmission protections. How does it work? SafeInput Control does not affect the normal use of site and it can be deployed to any input field when that particular input field calls for information protection. SafeInput Control can be easily deployed into any input field/area (e.g. password) on a website. Data entered by users in the field is secured by SafeInput Control, which can prevent over 99% of keyloggers, Trojans, viruses, worms from stealing users' critical information. SafeInput Control will then encrypt and transmit the received data to Server-side, on which the data is decrypted.

Hacking: The Art of Exploitation, 2nd Edition
Hacking: The Art of Exploitation, 2nd Edition

Hacking is the art of creative problem solving, whether that means finding an unconventional solution to a difficult problem or exploiting holes in sloppy programming. Many people call themselves hackers, but few have the strong technical foundation needed to really push the envelope.

Rather than merely showing how to run existing exploits, author Jon Erickson explains how arcane hacking techniques actually work. To share the art and science of hacking in a way that is accessible to everyone, Hacking: The Art of Exploitation, 2nd Edition introduces the fundamentals of C programming from a hacker's perspective.

The included LiveCD provides a complete Linux programming and debugging environment-all without modifying your current operating system. Use it to follow along with the book's examples as you fill gaps in your knowledge and explore hacking techniques on your own. Get your hands dirty debugging code, overflowing buffers, hijacking network communications, bypassing protections, exploiting cryptographic weaknesses, and perhaps even inventing new exploits. This book will teach you how to:

Program computers using C, assembly language, and shell scripts Corrupt system memory to run arbitrary code using buffer overflows and format strings Inspect processor registers and system memory with a debugger to gain a real understanding of what is happening Outsmart common security measures like nonexecutable stacks and intrusion detection systems Gain access to a remote server using port-binding or connect-back shellcode, and alter a server's logging behavior to hide your presenceRedirect network traffic, conceal open ports, and hijack TCP connections Crack encrypted wireless traffic using the FMS attack, and speed up brute-force attacks using a password probability matrix

Hackers are always pushing the boundaries, investigating the unknown, and evolving their art. Even if you don't already know how to program, Hacking: The Art of Exploitation, 2nd Edition will give you a complete picture of programming, machine architecture, network communications, and existing hacking techniques. Combine this knowledge with the included Linux environment, and all you need is your own creativity.

Security Warrior
Security Warrior

When it comes to network security, many users and administrators are running scared, and justifiably so. The sophistication of attacks against computer systems increases with each new Internet worm.

What's the worst an attacker can do to you? You'd better find out, right? That's what Security Warrior teaches you. Based on the principle that the only way to defend yourself is to understand your attacker in depth, Security Warrior reveals how your systems can be attacked. Covering everything from reverse engineering to SQL attacks, and including topics like social engineering, antiforensics, and common attacks against UNIX and Windows systems, this book teaches you to know your enemy and how to be prepared to do battle.

Security Warrior places particular emphasis on reverse engineering. RE is a fundamental skill for the administrator, who must be aware of all kinds of malware that can be installed on his machines -- trojaned binaries, "spyware" that looks innocuous but that sends private data back to its creator, and more. This is the only book to discuss reverse engineering for Linux or Windows CE. It's also the only book that shows you how SQL injection works, enabling you to inspect your database and web applications for vulnerability.

Security Warrior is the most comprehensive and up-to-date book covering the art of computer war: attacks against computer systems and their defenses. It's often scary, and never comforting. If you're on the front lines, defending your site against attackers, you need this book. On your shelf--and in your hands.

The Tao of Network Security Monitoring: Beyond Intrusion Detection
The Tao of Network Security Monitoring: Beyond Intrusion Detection

"The book you are about to read will arm you with the knowledge you need to defend your network from attackers—both the obvious and the not so obvious.... If you are new to network security, don't put this book back on the shelf! This is a great book for beginners and I wish I had access to it many years ago. If you've learned the basics of TCP/IP protocols and run an open source or commercial IDS, you may be asking 'What's next?' If so, this book is for you."

—Ron Gula, founder and CTO, Tenable Network Security, from the Foreword

"Richard Bejtlich has a good perspective on Internet security—one that is orderly and practical at the same time. He keeps readers grounded and addresses the fundamentals in an accessible way."

         —Marcus Ranum, TruSecure

"This book is not about security or network monitoring: It's about both, and in reality these are two aspects of the same problem. You can easily find people who are security experts or network monitors, but this book explains how to master both topics."

         —Luca Deri, ntop.org

"This book will enable security professionals of all skill sets to improve their understanding of what it takes to set up, maintain, and utilize a successful network intrusion detection strategy."

         —Kirby Kuehl, Cisco Systems

Every network can be compromised. There are too many systems, offering too many services, running too many flawed applications. No amount of careful coding, patch management, or access control can keep out every attacker. If prevention eventually fails, how do you prepare for the intrusions that will eventually happen?

Network security monitoring (NSM) equips security staff to deal with the inevitable consequences of too few resources and too many responsibilities. NSM collects the data needed to generate better assessment, detection, and response processes—resulting in decreased impact from unauthorized activities.

In The Tao of Network Security Monitoring, Richard Bejtlich explores the products, people, and processes that implement the NSM model. By focusing on case studies and the application of open source tools, he helps you gain hands-on knowledge of how to better defend networks and how to mitigate damage from security incidents.

Inside, you will find in-depth information on the following areas.

The NSM operational framework and deployment considerations. How to use a variety of open-source tools—including Sguil, Argus, and Ethereal—to mine network traffic for full content, session, statistical, and alert data.Best practices for conducting emergency NSM in an incident response scenario, evaluating monitoring vendors, and deploying an NSM architecture.Developing and applying knowledge of weapons, tactics, telecommunications, system administration, scripting, and programming for NSM.The best tools for generating arbitrary packets, exploiting flaws, manipulating traffic, and conducting reconnaissance.

Whether you are new to network intrusion detection and incident response, or a computer-security veteran, this book will enable you to quickly develop and apply the skills needed to detect, prevent, and respond to new and emerging threats.

Facebook Ads vs Google Adwords: A Comparison
Facebook Ads vs Google Adwords: A Comparison Facebook Ads vs Google Adwords – A Comparison Which one works best? Faceook advertising or Google Adwords? When we launched our product globally we decided to run campaigns on both Google and Facebook. I put equal amount of money on Google Adwords and Facebook for CPC campaigns. I also ran similar campaigns with more or less the same ad copy to measure the performance on Google and Facebook. Our book products requires users to download the app and then register. Hence I was measuring the performance of Google and Facebook in delivering registrations for books. I had some interesting learnings which i would like to share: Over a period of one month I got 10-15% lower CPC on Facebook vis-a-vis Google. The number of registrations from Facebook campaigns was approx 20% more than registrations from Google. Overall CPC campaigns on Facebook were more effective and gave a better ROI than Google. There are probably a couple of reasons for that:....... Network Security Assessment: Know Your Network
Network Security Assessment: Know Your Network

How secure is your network? The best way to find out is to attack it. Network Security Assessment provides you with the tricks and tools professional security consultants use to identify and assess risks in Internet-based networks-the same penetration testing model they use to secure government, military, and commercial networks. With this book, you can adopt, refine, and reuse this testing model to design and deploy networks that are hardened and immune from attack.

Network Security Assessment demonstrates how a determined attacker scours Internet-based networks in search of vulnerable components, from the network to the application level. This new edition is up-to-date on the latest hacking techniques, but rather than focus on individual issues, it looks at the bigger picture by grouping and analyzing threats at a high-level. By grouping threats in this way, you learn to create defensive strategies against entire attack categories, providing protection now and into the future.

Network Security Assessment helps you assess:

Web services, including Microsoft IIS, Apache, Tomcat, and subsystems such as OpenSSL, Microsoft FrontPage, and Outlook Web Access (OWA)Web application technologies, including ASP, JSP, PHP, middleware, and backend databases such as MySQL, Oracle, and Microsoft SQL ServerMicrosoft Windows networking components, including RPC, NetBIOS, and CIFS servicesSMTP, POP3, and IMAP email servicesIP services that provide secure inbound network access, including IPsec, Microsoft PPTP, and SSL VPNsUnix RPC services on Linux, Solaris, IRIX, and other platformsVarious types of application-level vulnerabilities that hacker tools and scripts exploit Assessment is the first step any organization should take to start managing information risks correctly. With techniques to identify and assess risks in line with CESG CHECK and NSA IAM government standards, Network Security Assessment gives you a precise method to do just that.

Network Security with OpenSSL
Network Security with OpenSSL

Most applications these days are at least somewhat network aware, but how do you protect those applications against common network security threats? Many developers are turning to OpenSSL, an open source version of SSL/TLS, which is the most widely used protocol for secure network communications.

The OpenSSL library is seeing widespread adoption for web sites that require cryptographic functions to protect a broad range of sensitive information, such as credit card numbers and other financial transactions. The library is the only free, full-featured SSL implementation for C and C++, and it can be used programmatically or from the command line to secure most TCP-based network protocols.

Network Security with OpenSSL enables developers to use this protocol much more effectively. Traditionally, getting something simple done in OpenSSL could easily take weeks. This concise book gives you the guidance you need to avoid pitfalls, while allowing you to take advantage of the library?s advanced features. And, instead of bogging you down in the technical details of how SSL works under the hood, this book provides only the information that is necessary to use OpenSSL safely and effectively. In step-by-step fashion, the book details the challenges in securing network communications, and shows you how to use OpenSSL tools to best meet those challenges.

As a system or network administrator, you will benefit from the thorough treatment of the OpenSSL command-line interface, as well as from step-by-step directions for obtaining certificates and setting up your own certification authority. As a developer, you will further benefit from the in-depth discussions and examples of how to use OpenSSL in your own programs. Although OpenSSL is written in C, information on how to use OpenSSL with Perl, Python and PHP is also included.

OpenSSL may well answer your need to protect sensitive data. If that?s the case, Network Security with OpenSSL is the only guide available on the subject.

Security in Computing, 4th Edition
Security in Computing, 4th Edition The New State-of-the-Art in Information Security: Now Covers the Economics of Cyber Security and the Intersection of Privacy and Information Security

For years, IT and security professionals and students have turned to Security in Computing as the definitive guide to information about computer security attacks and countermeasures. In their new fourth edition, Charles P. Pfleeger and Shari Lawrence Pfleeger have thoroughly updated their classic guide to reflect today's newest technologies, standards, and trends.

The authors first introduce the core concepts and vocabulary of computer security, including attacks and controls. Web Data Mining: Exploring Hyperlinks, Contents, and Usage Data (Data-Centric Systems and Applications)
Web Data Mining: Exploring Hyperlinks, Contents, and Usage Data (Data-Centric Systems and Applications) Web mining aims to discover useful information and knowledge from Web hyperlinks, page contents, and usage data. Although Web mining uses many conventional data mining techniques, it is not purely an application of traditional data mining due to the semi-structured and unstructured nature of the Web data. The field has also developed many of its own algorithms and techniques. Liu has written a comprehensive text on Web mining, which consists of two parts. The first part covers the data mining and machine learning foundations, where all the essential concepts and algorithms of data mining and machine learning are presented. The second part covers the key topics of Web mining, where Web crawling, search, social network analysis, structured data extraction, information integration, opinion mining and sentiment analysis, Web usage mining, query log mining, computational advertising, and recommender systems are all treated both in breadth and in depth. His book thus brings all the related concepts and algorithms together to form an authoritative and coherent text.  The book offers a rich blend of theory and practice. It is suitable for students, researchers and practitioners interested in Web mining and data mining both as a learning text and as a reference book. Professors can readily use it for classes on data mining, Web mining, and text mining. Additional teaching materials such as lecture slides, datasets, and implemented algorithms are available online.

Regulating Internet Abuses: Invasion of Privacy
Regulating Internet Abuses: Invasion of Privacy Spam unsolicited, unwanted commercial communication, especially in bulk form is increasingly included in the areas of concern and regulation of governments worldwide.
Unfortunately, this recognized and exponentially growing menace has not yet met its regulatory match. Piecemeal controls, lack of international cooperation, and the absence of an overall policy on combating patently intrusive and unwanted messages in all channels of communication hamper the struggle.

Regulating Internet Abuses contains eleven national reports, together with a general report, on this major problem that is presently burdening and distorting communications through the Internet. Most of the reports were presented at the XVIIth Congress of the International Academy of Comparative Law held at Utrecht, the Netherlands on July 19, 2006. The authors have had the opportunity to revise and update their texts before they were submitted here for publication. The national reports are from Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Poland, Spain, South Africa, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Starting from some common assumptions including respect for freedom of expression; emphasis on unsolicited, bulk , automated messages to strangers; and non-interference with the normal use of the Internet the contributors set out to tackle spammer elusiveness and the difficulties of cross-border coordination that plague this
field. Among the broadly conceived legal responses they consider are the following:
making spam illegal; empowering the user to avoid and repel spam; laws governing confidentiality of personal data; application of unfair competition laws; and conscripting the service providers to block spam in its tracks through a variety of controls.

The reports provide documentation and analysis of the various ways in which these approaches have been used, or can be used, in legislation and case law in a variety of
national and international fora.Workers in all fields of communications, from technologists to legal practitioners and academics to administrative policymakers, will benefit enormously from these syntheses and insights.
